Cooking an Organic Turkey For the Perfect Holiday Meal
Why Go Organic?
As with other types of food, organic turkey is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. This means that the meat is free from chemicals and other artificial preservatives. In addition, organic turkeys are raised in more natural conditions, such as free-range environments, and are fed a diet of organic feed.
Choosing the Right Organic Turkey
When selecting an organic turkey, it is important to consider its size and weight. For most households, a 10-pound turkey will serve 8 to 10 people. However, if you are hosting a large gathering, you may need a larger bird. It is also important to consider the age of the turkey, as well as its color, texture, and smell.
When buying an organic turkey, look for one that is free from any visible signs of spoilage. The skin should be moist and firm to the touch and the feathers should be glossy and free from dirt. The turkey should also have a pleasant, mild aroma.
Preparing the Organic Turkey
Once you have chosen your organic turkey, it is important to properly prepare it for cooking. Start by removing the neck and giblets from the cavity. Then, thoroughly rinse the turkey inside and out with cold water. After rinsing, dry the outside of the bird with a clean kitchen towel.
Next, place the turkey in a roasting pan that is large enough to accommodate it. Rub the bird with butter or oil, and season it with salt and pepper. Place any herbs or spices on the outside of the turkey. Finally, cover the bird with aluminum foil, and place it in the preheated oven.
Cooking the Organic Turkey
Cook the turkey for about 20 minutes per pound, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. To ensure even cooking, make sure to rotate the pan every hour. When the turkey is nearly finished cooking, remove the aluminum foil to allow the skin to brown. During the last 15 minutes of cooking, baste the turkey with pan juices to keep it moist.
When the turkey is done cooking, remove it from the oven and let it rest for at least 20 minutes before carving. This will ensure that the juices are evenly distributed throughout the bird. After resting, carve the turkey and serve it with your favorite side dishes.
