When Can You Eat After a Tooth Pulled?
Having a tooth pulled can be a scary and painful experience. But, the good news is that it’s a relatively simple procedure and the recovery period is generally short. After your tooth is pulled, you might be wondering when it’s safe to start eating again. The answer varies depending on how your dentist performs the extraction and your overall health.
Pain and Bleeding
Immediately after the extraction, you may experience some pain and bleeding. It’s normal to experience some pain and bleeding for the first 24 hours. It’s important to bite down on the gauze your dentist provides for at least 30 minutes to reduce bleeding. If your bleeding does not stop within 24 hours, contact your dentist.
Eating After the Procedure
It’s best to wait an hour or two after the extraction before eating anything. This gives your body enough time to start the healing process. Start with soft foods such as yogurt, soup, or mashed potatoes. You can gradually move to solid foods such as eggs and toast. Avoid foods that are hard, crunchy, or chewy. This includes nuts, chips, popcorn, and other hard snacks.
Dry Socket
Sometimes after a tooth extraction, the socket may become dry. This is known as a dry socket and it’s caused by the blood clot not forming correctly. Eating too soon after an extraction can increase the risk of getting a dry socket. If you experience a dry socket, contact your dentist immediately.
Pain Relievers
Your dentist may provide you with a pain reliever to take after your extraction. Make sure to take the pain reliever as directed. This will help to reduce pain and swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen may also help with the pain.
Preventive Care
To prevent further dental problems, it’s important to practice good oral hygiene after an extraction. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss every day. You should also avoid smoking or drinking alcohol until the extraction site has healed.
