How to Can Sardines

Canning is a great way to preserve food, and sardines are an excellent choice for canning. Canned sardines are packed with flavor and nutrition, and they make a great addition to any pantry or kitchen. With the right tools and a few simple steps, you can easily can your own sardines at home.

What You Need

Canning sardines requires a few key items. You’ll need fresh sardines, canning jars, canning lids and rings, a canning funnel, a pot of boiling water, and a jar lifter. You can buy all of these items at most hardware stores, or you can look for them online.

Preparing the Sardines

Before you begin the canning process, you need to prepare the sardines. Start by gutting and cleaning the fish. Then, rinse off the sardines with cold water to remove any dirt or debris. If you want, you can also add spices or herbs to your sardines before canning. This is totally optional, but it can add a nice flavor to your canned sardines.

Filling the Jars

Once your sardines are prepared, it’s time to fill the jars. Start by placing a canning funnel in a jar and adding the sardines. Make sure to leave an inch of headspace in the jar. Then, use a damp cloth to wipe off the rim of the jar. This will help ensure that the lid seals properly.

Canning the Sardines

Once the jars are filled, you can start the canning process. Place the lids and rings on the jars, and then place the filled jars in a pot of boiling water. Boil the jars for at least ten minutes, and then use a jar lifter to carefully remove the jars from the pot. Let the jars cool for 12-24 hours before testing the seals.

Testing the Seals

Once the jars have cooled, you can test the seals. To do this, press down lightly on the center of the lid. If the lid doesn’t move or make a sound, the seal is good. If the lid moves or makes a popping noise, the lid didn’t seal properly and the jar needs to be reprocessed. Once the seals are tested, you can store the jars in your pantry for up to a year.

Enjoy Your Canned Sardines

Now that your sardines are canned, you can enjoy them in a variety of ways. Canned sardines are delicious in salads, sandwiches, casseroles, and more. They’re also an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. So, stock up on canned sardines and enjoy all the delicious possibilities.
