How to Cook Tamales in the Oven
Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish that can be made with a variety of fillings. They are made by steaming a mixture of masa flour and lard, which is then filled with a savory or sweet filling, wrapped in a corn husk, and steamed until cooked. While traditionally tamales are made on the stovetop, they can also be made in the oven.
Ingredients
The ingredients needed to make tamales in the oven are: 2 cups of masa flour, 1 cup of lard, 2 cups of chicken or pork filling (or any other savory filling of your choice), 1/2 cup of shredded cheese, 2 tablespoons of chili powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 cups of chicken stock.
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a baking sheet with lard.
2. In a bowl, combine the masa flour, lard, chili powder, and salt. Stir until fully combined and the mixture becomes crumbly.
3. Spread the masa mixture onto the prepared baking sheet, and spread it out into an even layer.
4. Spread the filling of your choice over the masa mixture. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top.
5. Pour the chicken stock over the top of the mixture.
6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
Serving
Tamales can be served hot with a variety of toppings such as sour cream, salsa, guacamole, or cheese. Enjoy!
